Biography

In the late '80s, the theatrical group Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone was staging the play Aquela Coisa Toda at the Ipanema theater (Rio), while Marina Lima was taking the next slot with her show. Members of both groups were acquainted: Marina's guitarist Ricardo Barreto, for example, is a cousin of Asdrúbal's Regina Casé. And in the festive young artistic scene of Ipanema, partying with new people is always welcome. So, in the transitional period of time between the two, members of both groups jammed together. What seemed to be just fun ended up being the launching of the style known as Brazilian rock, or the first time when the rock made in Brazil went really viable commercially. And when Asdrúbal's Evandro Mesquita was invited by the public relations of the bar Caribe, just opened by a famous clothing store, to perform there, he teamed up with Marina's musicians Barreto, Lobão, Junno Homrich (bass), Zé Luís (sax) and Guto Barros (guitar), opening at February 21, 1981 with the group that soon would take the name Blitz. Formed in the 70s in Rio, the Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone impacted the theatrical scene of the city with its lively, youngish appeal and language, heavily derived from the hedonism from Ipanema. Its multimedia show A Farra da Terra, mixing poetry, rock and video, was highly successful and had the support of Caetano Veloso for the release of its songs in the LP A Farra da Terra (1983). Perfeito Fortuna, one of the group's members (and also a former member of the Os Mutantes in its Carioca phase), was also one of the organizers of the Circo Voador (the Flying Circus), at downtown Rio, in the historic region of the Arches of Lapa. The circus, also closely linked with the launching of the Brazilian rock, held every kind of artistic performances, having opened at January 15, 1982, and in the short period of this seminal phase (it was closed in three months but was resurrected later) it changed the face of the Carioca entertainment with hot shows by Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque, and by new rock bands like Blitz, Brylho and Barão Vermelho. Asdrúbal's former members Luís Fernando Guimarães and Regina Casé met nationwide success as mainstream TV and cinema actors in the 1990s and 2000s. ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide
