Ash is an American comic book created by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, published by Event Comics about a firefighter with superpowers.

Ash is the super-hero alter-ego of fictional firefighter Ashley Quinn. Ash was "born" from a mysterious incident when Ashley was trapped inside a burning building. Ash has the ability to use various flame-based weapons, including blades that can be made from fire by his gauntlets.

Story

Ash had several publication runs, which began with the self-titled series and continued with "The Fire Within" (the subtitle was lacking from the covers) and "Cinder & Smoke".

The first run consisted of seven issues, which included with a "zero" issue that added more details to the origin of Ash and how Ashley Quinn came to have his abilities. In the Zero issue it is revealed that when Ashley was trapped within a burning building in issue one, he was able to pull into a Coffin of Life or Death (COLD Unit, a device transported from the future) while near death. The COLD Unit began repairing the damage done to his body and also gave his mind control over what Ashley feared most, that being fire. The COLD Unit held the DNA of a warrior from the future who had abilities similar to Ash named Gunther DelSantiago (aka Gun). The COLD Unit was damaged and the transformation was not properly completed, leaving Ashley unable to control his Ash persona for a short time.

Creation & Inspiration

Penciler Joe Quesada and inker Jimmy Palmiotti, after working well together on various projects such as Valiant Comics' X-O Manowar and following the creation of their first joint-project in Kid Death and Fluffy for a Creator's Universe card series, sought to create their own studio with their own original characters.

Quesada and Palmiotti spent two weeks in the Florida Keys developing the idea of what would become Ash. One key aspect in the design of the character was the close resemblance to the suits worn by firefighters of the New York Fire Department. The key element in Ashley Quinn being portrayed as a firefighter was to have a character who was both a super-hero in is civilian life as well as in secret.
