The forest encompasses 1,384,132 acres (5,601.38 km2), of which 1,287,909 acres (5,211.98 km2) are located in Utah. 276,175 acres (1,117.64 km2) are located in the High Uintas Wilderness. In descending order of land area the forest is located in parts of Duchesne, Uintah, Daggett, Sweetwater (Wyoming), Wasatch, Summit, and Utah counties[1]. About 7% of the forest is in Wyoming, all of it in Sweetwater County[1]. Forest headquarters are located in Vernal, Utah. There are local ranger district offices in Duchesne, Manila, Roosevelt, and Vernal.[2]
National Forest System lands are located in three major areas: the northern and southern slopes of the Uinta Mountains, the Wyoming Basin, and the Tavaputs Plateau. Elevations on the Ashley National Forest range from 6,000 feet (1,800 m) to over 13,500 feet (4,100 m).
