Late 12th-c. chanson de geste celebrating the youthful exploits of Roland prior to Rencesvals. The large number of surviving Anglo-Norman manuscripts suggests that it was particularly popular in England. The poem ends with warnings of the rebellion against Charlemagne by Girart de Fraite, a figure related to (and perhaps identical with) Girart de Vienne and Girart de Roussillon.
