The Assa Abloy Group is a Swedish company. The group is the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of locks[citation needed]. Assa Abloy was formed in 1994 when ASSA AB was detached from Swedish security firm Securitas AB. Shortly thereafter the Finnish high-security lock manufacturer Abloy Oy (a subsidiary of the Finnish company Wärtsilä) was acquired. The company was introduced to the Stockholm stock exchange later the same year. Assa Abloy now owns Yale lock, Sargent and the high-security lock firms of Medeco in the U.S., Mul-T-Lock in Israel, Fichet in France, and VingCard Elsafe in Norway. It is controlled by Gustaf Douglas through his company Latour.

The name Abloy comes from Swedish-Finnish bilingual organisation Ab Låsfabriken Lukkotehdas Oy (first Ltd. and Låsfabriken from Swedish language, last Ltd. and Lukkotehdas from Finnish language), meaning Ltd. Lock Factory Lock Factory Ltd. in 1918 and in the next year Ab Lukko Oy, meaning Ltd. Lock Ltd. In 1990 the name was changed to Abloy Oy.
Abloy produces an extensive line of high-security disc tumbler locks.

- Assa Abloy has five divisions – EMEA, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Global Technologies and Entrance Systems.
- The EMEA division operates in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Example of brands: ABLOY, ASSA, Chubb, IKON, TESA, Yale and Vachette. The divisional management is based in London, United Kingdom.
- The Americas division operates in North and South America. Example of brands: Corbin Russwin, Curries, Emtek, Medeco, Phillips, SARGENT and La Fonte. The divisional management is based in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
- The Asia-Pacific division operates in Asia and Oceania. Example of brands: Lockwood, Guli, Wangli, Baodean, Tianming, Shenfei, Interlock and iRevo. The divisional management is based in Hong Kong, China.
- The Global Technologies division operates globally. It’s business unit HID Global manufactures and sells products for electronic access control, secure issuance of cards, identification technology. It’s business unit Assa Abloy Hospitality manufactures, sells and service electronic lock products and software for hotels and cruise ships. Example of brands: HID, Fargo, Elsafe and VingCard.
- The Entrance Systems division manufactures, sells and service automatic door systems. Example of brands: Besam, EntreMatic and Ditec. The divisional management is based in Landskrona, Sweden.
History
The Assa Abloy Group was formed in 1994 when ASSA AB was detached from Swedish security company Securitas AB. Shortly thereafter the Finnish high-security lock manufacturer Abloy Oy, a subsidiary of the Finnish company Wärtsilä, was acquired. The company was introduced to the Stockholm Stock Exchange later the same year.
1996 - The acquisition of Essex positioned Assa Abloy in the U.S. electronic security market
1999 - The acquisition of Effeff Fritz Fuss in Germany enabled Assa Abloy to sell electromechanical locks to the German market. Assa Abloy acquires Fichet in France, manufacturer of high security locks.
2000 – The global lock group Yale Intruder Security is acquired. Assa Abloy acquires HID, a proximity identification access controls company. The acquisition added electronic identification to the Assa Abloy’s product portfolio.
2001 – Assa Abloy participates in Volvo Ocean Race.
2002 – Finish at second in the Volvo Ocean Race. Besam, a Swedish automatic door solutions company is acquired.
2003 - Carl-Henrik Svanberg leaves his position as President and CEO of Assa Abloy for a position as President and CEO of telecommunications company Ericsson and is replaced by Bo Dankis.
2005 - Bo Dankis leaves his position as President and CEO of Assa Abloy and is replaced by Johan Molin, previous president of the industrial group Nilfisk-Advance Nilfisk.
2006 - Fargo Electronics is acquired. Fargo develops systems for safe issuing of ID cards, including card printers, peripheral equipment and software.
2007 - Baodean manufacturer of high-security locks in China and iRevo, supplier of digital door locks in Korea are acquired. In 2007, in total, 17 companies joined the Group.
2008 – In total Assa Abloy acquired 18 companies, for example ShenFei in China.
2009 - Italian door automation manufacturer, Ditec, is acquired.
