Assaye is a small village in the Jalna district of the state of Maharashtra in western India. The village was the location of the Battle of Assaye in 1803, fought between the Maratha Confederacy and the British East India Company.
Although a little known battle, it became the first real test for the young general Sir Arthur Wellesley (later victor at the Battle of Waterloo). Here he commanded a vastly outnumbered combined force of British and Sepoy regiments against a horde. He always described this as his greatest military victory. ==References== This article incorporates text from the article "Assaye" in the Encyclopædia Britannica, Eleventh Edition, a publication now in the public domain.
