Asshole (also less commonly known as Presidents & Assholes, President, Scum, Capitalism, Schlub and other names), an Americanized drinking game^[1][2][3][4] version of Dai Hin Min, is a card game for three or more in which players race to get rid of all of the cards in their hands in order to become President in the following round.^[1][3] There are countless variants of this game, including various "house rules," which must be established before the start of the game to prevent arguments.

Equipment

To play this game, players need only a standard deck of Anglo-American playing cards and a surplus of beer.

Game play

Play in Asshole is organized into tricks, much like Hearts or Bridge.

The Asshole (the person to place last in the previous round, see below) shuffles and deals the cards. All the cards are dealt, until none are left, in clockwise rotation.^[1]

The player on the dealer's left begins by leading any card, or set of matching cards, though in some house rules the player with a certain card always leads. The player to their left may then play an equal number of matching cards with a higher face value, or may pass. Note that you must play the same number of cards as the lead. If the leader starts with one card, only one card may be played on top of it; if they lead with a pair, only pairs may be played on top of it, and so on. The next player may do the same, and so on. This continues until all players pass. The last person to play cards leads the next trick.^[1]

General rules

• A two (2) card is "clear", meaning all played cards are removed, and the person playing the 2 starts again^[4]
• A four (4) card is a "social", meaning all players must drink. This card may be played on any card or combination of cards. The following player must play on the card placed down preceeding the four (4)^[4]
• If a player passes, he or she must drink and will have another chance when their turn comes up again.^[2]
• When a player matches the rank of the previously played card, the next player's turn is skipped. A skipped player must drink.EX: A 3 is played on a 3 next player is skipped, when two 3s are played on a 3 then next two players are skipped.^[2]
• If a player reaches his or her last card, he or she must immediately yell "last card". If someone points out that they didn't say it, or if someone else reaches their own last card, and yells it first, then, the player who forgot to yell must pick up all cards face up on the table. Cards that have been previously cleared by the asshole are not to be picked up.

Common 'House Rules'

• The game can be played with a number of cards, usually black jacks (e.g. jacks of spades/clubs) or, if three cards are required, one-eyed picture cards (e.g. jacks of hearts and spades and kings of diamonds), which are seen as above two's and win any trick. This is useful when playing with more players as more equal distribution of 'power' cards is likely.
• In some games the players who finish last and penultimately are named Mexicans rather than assholes.
• In a version more common in England, the asshole is forced to give his two best cards to the president and the president gives his two worst cards away to the asshole. The same happens for the vice-ass and president, but with only one card exchanged. This version is fun in the extreme when you're on top, but people can become annoyed very quickly if the cards aren't going their way.^{[citation needed]}

Different Versions

Asshole is also played with a black jack as the highest card, followed by two and so on. This is more common in the English version of Asshole - 'President' where the Asshole and Vice Asshole are called Mexican and Vice Mexican.

Special titles

There are at least 4 special titles for players during the game, and each player is permitted to give drinks indiscriminately to any lower-ranked player.^[1][2] Often, players move seats to sit in the order of their place, so as not to forget the order.^[1]

• President - The winner of the previous round. He or she has the power to add rules to the game. Some variants only allow the President to make one rule during each term (hand), or only allow Presidents to make rules after winning a certain number of hands, usually about 3.^[4] A Presidential rule stays in effect until a future Presidential rule repeals or contradicts it.
• Vice President ("VP") - Second place in the previous round.
• Secretary - The place after the VP.
• Normal People - Anyone in between VP and Vice Asshole.
• Vice Asshole ("Beer Bitch") - Second to last place in the previous round.
• Asshole - Last place in the previous round (may wear beer case on head saying "Asshole"). He or she is the "whipping boy" of the game but is allowed to give out drinks while shuffling and dealing the cards for the next hand.^[2] The Asshole also clears cards from the game when needed. In some rules, if another player does the job of the asshole, that player has to drink or is penalized in some other way.^[2][1][2]

More or less titles may be used, depending on how many players are in the game.^[4]

In popular culture

It's played by the five main characters at a party in American Pie 2 and Beerfest.
