Assimilation

Games: Assimilation

Game Description

Assimilation is a board game for home computers, played with virtual marbles of different colors. The ten different game boards are each laid out with a pattern of spaces in which the marbles sit. The object of the game is to cover the board with your own color of marbles, by "assimilating" the marbles of your opponents. Only a few basic moves are possible, such as clones, jumps, and teleports. The game is designed to be easy to learn but difficult to master.

Review: Overall

Assimilation contains the basic elements of a great puzzle game, including the much sought after but not always realized tradition of "easy to play but hard to master." You can "assimilate" gameplay instantly since only two moves are possible, jump or clone, as you try and block the enemy and control the game board. The premise is simple and the elegant graphics, refined music, and complimentary sound effects provide a quality look and feel, all of which make it hard to understand why Assimilation doesn't fulfill its rich potential.

Pinpointing exactly where Assimilation goes wrong is difficult, but most of the problem can be attributed to its lack of excitement. While the deliberate pace encourages you to think through your moves, the resulting action doesn't reward you enough for the effort -- even winning a board awards you with only a small banner. Although games with multiple computer players are a bit more thrilling, there's simply no satisfaction to be had in the long run.

Most everything in Assimilation is first-rate, except gameplay, which makes it feel secondary. With clearly designed game boards, beautifully rendered textures, and sharp animations, Assimilation is easy to enjoy visually, and the sound effects are perfect. Unfortunately, these elements are wasted on a game that most players won't care to play.

Assimilation is a great effort, but fans of puzzle games will find it lacking. Its originality and simplicity are its strength, but all the pretty graphics in the world can't make up for the lack of enjoyment.
