any of various plants of the mainly southern hemisphere genus Astelia. Some species are epiphytic (esp. A. solandri, kowharawhara), but most are ground plants with long sword-like leaves. Also called bush (or tree) flax, bush lily.

Astelia is a genus of rhizomatous tufted perennials in the family Asteliaceae which are native to the Pacific region as well as the Falkland Islands, Réunion and Mauritius.[1] The species generally grow in forests, swamps and amongst low alpine vegetation; occasionally they are epiphytic.[2]
