AsterFax is an open-source fax server program, built as an extension to the Asterisk PBX telephone system. It is produced by Asterisk I.T., Australia, who also supply and support Asterisk PBX and compatible hardware.
An existing Asterisk PBX installation is a prerequisite, so AsterFax is almost always used alongside Asterisk.
Its primary end-user interface is e-mail; messages are turned into faxes and vice-versa.
Unlike most open-source software, AsterFax is not always free of charge; a commercial licence must be purchased for an installation which handles more than one fax line.
