Review

This 1988 CD contains what was originally called "the Great 16," the four 1939 recording sessions (16 songs in all) by cornetist Muggsy Spanier's hot Ragtime Band. All of that music (plus eight alternate takes) was reissued on CD by Bluebird in 1994 but this CD also contains two selections from Eddie Condon in 1929 and four songs from Bud Freeman's Summa Cum Laude Orchestra in 1939. For those listeners who do not need his alternates, this is a highly recommended set with plenty of exciting and heated Chicago jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
