Athenäum

Athenäum, a literary periodical edited by F. and A. W. Schlegel, which appeared twice yearly from 1798 to 1800. It was the organ of the group of early Romantic writers (see Romantik) which included the Schlegels, Novalis, and Schleiermacher, all of whom wrote for Athenäum. Particularly notable contributions are Novalis's Blütenstaub and Hymnen an die Nacht, and F. Schlegel's Ideen, Fragmente, and Charakteristik der Meisterischen Lehrjahre von Goethe. A reprint (3 vols.) appeared in 1983.
