Atrophy

1. decrease in size of a normally developed organ or tissue; wasting.
2. to undergo or cause atrophy.

  • disuse a. — atrophy of local musculature due to failure to use a part of the body, due usually to pain. Is separate from neurogenic atrophy when nerve damage causes atrophy from both disuse and denervation.
  • iris a. — occurs with aging, particularly in Siamese cats and miniature schnauzers and poodles; may be secondary to trauma, recurrent uveitis and chronic glaucoma.
  • mammary a. — the terminal stage of chronic mastitis; palpation establishes that little mammary tissue remains and inflammatory fibrous tissue has subsided.

  • optic a. — atrophy of the optic nerve; may occur with trauma, prolonged inflammatory diseases of the eye, and retinal degeneration.
  • retinal a. — see progressive retinal atrophy.
  • serous a. — in cachexia there is mobilization of depot fat and lipid vacuoles are progressively reduced in size and replaced by proteinaceous fluid which converts the fat depots to gelatinous masses of serous atrophy.
  • villous a. — a common finding in a variety of intestinal diseases of animals, including viral, bacterial and protozoal infections, parasitism, hypersensitivity reactions in the bowel and alimentary lymphosarcoma. Malabsorption and diarrhea result. An idiopathic, possibly immune-mediated, villous atrophy occurs in dogs.

Biography

Initially known as Heresy, Tucson, AZ's Atrophy was formed in 1986 and featured vocalist Brian Zimmerman, guitarists Chris Lykins and Rick Skowron, bassist James Gulotta, and drummer Tim Kelly. Modeled on the high-precision thrash metal quintets prowling the Bay Area a few hundreds of miles to the north (Exodus, Vio-Lence, etc.), Atrophy only recorded a couple of albums for Roadrunner Records and both 1988's Socialized Hate and 1990's Violent by Nature offered competently executed but relatively unoriginal (er, atrophied?) thrash metal. Indeed, few protests were heard when Atrophy decided to ride off into the sunset following these two efforts, and reunion gigs have understandably been scarce. However, years later Skowron, Gulotta, and Kelly did work together again in a new project named Head Circus. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Atrophy was a thrash metal band formed in Tucson, Arizona, USA by Chris Lykins, James Gulotta, and Brian Zimmerman. The original bandname was Heresy, but by the time the band was rounded out to its professional line-up – with Tim Kelly and Rick Skowron joining the fold – the name was changed.

In 1987, the band produced two cassette demos and were subsequently picked up by major thrash metal specialist label, Roadrunner Records. They recorded two albums – Socialized Hate in 1988, and Violent By Nature in 1990 – and toured the USA and Europe with fellow Arizonans Sacred Reich and Swiss band, Coroner.

Following the European tour, Chris Lykins left the band to go to medical school. The band attempted to carry on with new members and even got so far as making a pre-production tape for a third album, but Roadrunner Records lost confidence in the band – Chris Lykins was one of the main songwriters – and they were dropped by the label as a consequence.[1]

Tim Kelly and James Gulotta went on to form a band called Head Circus, which Rick Skowron is also a member of intermittently, but they have yet to record a studio album.[2]

Chris Lykins completed medical school and is now an ENT, James Gulotta runs a tile business, and Rick Skowron is an avionics engineer and avid motorcycle racer.[3][4][5]
