Mining village on the A76, 14 m. SE of Kilmarnock. The Second Keep, built in 1612 (3 m. W), was Boswell's family home until 1762, when his father's new house was finished. This, sometimes called Place Affleck, was where he spent some time after his marriage to Margaret Montgomerie in 1769, and where he entertained Dr Johnson on his tour in 1773. Boswell and his wife are buried in the family mausoleum next to the church in the village. The house is open on very occasional open days and is available for holiday lets from the Landmark Trust (http://www.landmarktrust.org.uk).

Auchinleck /ɒxɨnˈlɛk/; OKH-in-LEK  (from Scottish Gaelic: Achadh nan Leac meaning "field of the flagstones", Scots: Affleck /ˈæflɛk/)[3] is a village five miles south-east of Mauchline, and a couple of miles north-west of Cumnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland.

Near the village (Auchinleck Estate) is Auchinleck House, past home of the lawyer, diarist and biographer James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck.

Auchinleck has much been associated with the coal mining industry and the village was expanded after WWII with the addition of a number of houses referred to as Back Rogerton.

The closure of the collieries at High House in 1983 and nearby Barony in 1989, as well as the closure of the Curries soft drinks factory, and the closure of the Co-op shops almost wiped out Auchinleck's reason for existence.

The restoration of Barony A Frame, part of the former Barony Colliery, and the opening of Dumfries House to the public, as well as a local community initiative (Auchinleck Community Development Initiative) is slowly bringing a sense of pride back to this devastated village.

The famous Junior Football club, Auchinleck Talbot, play at Beechwood park in the village.

Auchinleck has three public schools: St Patricks, Auchinleck Primary and Auchinleck Academy which teaches pupils from Drongan, Catrine, Ochiltree, Mauchline, Muirkirk and Sorn as well as students from Auchinleck.
