Aughrim (Irish: Eachroim, meaning Horse ridge) is a small village in County Wicklow, Republic of Ireland. It lies in a scenic valley in the east of Ireland where the Ow and Derry rivers meet to form the Aughrim river. Aughrim is on the R747 regional road which runs between Arklow and Baltinglass.
The Rednagh Bridge south of the village was the site of an engagement during the 1798 rebellion between Crown forces and the rebels.
Aughrim has won the tidiest town in County Wicklow award from 1996-2005. There are a number of unusual granite terraced houses throughout the village, constructed - along with a forge, and town hall - at the behest of the Earl of Meath. Aughrim was a granite mining village, and this material is widely used, giving the village a distinctive and coherent architecture.
A plaque on the bridge commemorates Anne Devlin, who was employed by and supported Robert Emmet, a revolutionary who was hanged in 1803 for his leadership of an aborted uprising.
Aughrim is an important agricultural, horticultural and timber processing village, and has become a popular venue for walkers. The Sean Linehan Way provides woodland and riverside walking in the valleys of the Three Wells and Macreddin Brooks, and access to nearby Cushbawn Hill.
Aughrim is home to the county grounds of the Wicklow county Gaelic Athletic Association team, here there has been epic triupmhs over many of the other challengers for the All-Ireland. They are currently managed by the legendary Mick O'Dwyer. In August 2007 they are in the final of one of the most prestigious cups in Ireland, the Tommy Murphy cup, where they will contest with Antrim for the coveted title. Wicklow are strong favourites for the game.
Aughrim is the sporting ground capital of Wicklow with famed fishing grounds, lakes and rivers; also bowls can be enjoyed. A world class golf course is in the process of being developed out the Macreddin road to re-affirm the standing of Aughrim as a sporting town. Paul McGinley; top European golfer and player responsible for the Ryder Cup victory in 2004, is the designer of the course.
Shane Byrne one of the most feared and respected hookers in rugby is originally from Aughrim. His family business Arklow Waste Disposal is run by his proud father Arthur and younger smaller brother Billy.
Killacloran is the Hollywood area of Aughrim where all sites are extremely sought after. It nestles on a hill overlooking the picturesque town; most houses sell in excess of 2 million euro in this area.
