Cable Car Climbing San Francisco's Nob Hill
|
"To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars...." On this date in 1873,
Andrew S. Hallidie successfully tested a
cable car he had promoted for the city of San Francisco. Called the
Clay Street Hill Railroad, that first cable car system was designed by
tramway engineer
William Eppelsheimer with assistance from Hallidie.
San Francisco's cable car system, the oldest and largest such system, still uses a modified version of the Hallidie Cable Car.
