Prepare the hankies. Sixty-five years ago today Walt Disney'sBambi premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Who doesn't smile at the memory of Bambi's awkward attempt to cross a frozen lake or at Thumper's gleeful laugh at the fawn's mistaken first words? And, is there anyone who hasn't shed tears when Bambi's mother dies after being shot by hunters? The animators worked hard to draw animals that would tug at our heartstrings. To assist them, the Maine Development Commission sent two fawns to Disney's studios to be kept as pets so the artists could study their movements and behavior. Later, they were released into a nearby park.
