Julia Child

One of this summer's hottest movies is Julie and Julia, the story of two women, a few generations apart, who love to cook. An autobiographical story by Julie Powell, it tells about the yearlong project she took upon herself to cook every meal in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking — 524 recipes in 365 days — and to write about it in her blog. Amy Adams portrays Julie, the blog's author, and Meryl Streep plays Julia Child, the unlikely cook who taught Americans all about French cuisine through her TV show and books. In 1993, Child became the first woman to be inducted into the Culinary Institute Hall of Fame. The kitchen she used in her TV series, The French Chef, was dismantled and permanently installed in the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, DC. Julia Child was born on this date in 1912.
