Biography

A devotee of Franck and Wagner at an early age, Holmes was not able to pursue music until the age of eleven after her mother died. Her father was Irish and her mother of mixed Scottish and Irish desent. They settled in France where her godfather was Alfred de Vigny (possibly her biological father as well). She studied with Lambert the organist of Versailles Cathedral, instrumentation with Klose, and a pupil of Cesar Franck. She composed a number of operas, choral works, dramatic symphonies and symphonic poems. Her presence dominated the salon milieau of her day and she was admired for her beauty, talent and presence by Franck, Wagner, D'Indy, and Mallarme.
