Biography

Augustana are a heartland equivalent of Coldplay and Keane, with a touch of mid-'90s adult alternative throwback (think Counting Crows or the Wallflowers) also peppering their mellow, piano-based music. Although based in California, the band formed in southern Illinois in 2002, while singer/keyboardist Dan Layus and guitarist Josiah Rosen were studying contemporary Christian music at Greenville College. The band's original lineup also included bassist Simeon Lohrmann, second keyboardist David Lamoureaux, and drummer Kyle Baker. This lineup released a pair of self-distributed CDs -- the full-length Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays and the EP Mayfield -- in 2003, but the conservative climate of Greenville College proved to be too confining for the band's founders. Choosing music over academia, Layus and Rosen left Greenville for Los Angeles in 2004, jettisoning the rest of the band and reforming with a new lineup that included keyboardist John Vincent, bassist Jared Palomar, and drummer Justin South.

The reformulated Augustana signed with Epic Records in 2005 and released their major-label debut, All the Stars and Boulevards, in September of that year. A slow starter, the album gradually rose to national attention on the strength of "Boston," a heartfelt ballad that was featured on an episode of Scrubs in early 2006. To encourage the accompanying increase in Augustana's popularity, a limited-edition reissue of the album (with extra songs and video content) was released in September 2006. By the following year, All the Stars and Boulevards had finally made its way into the Billboard Top 40 -- a whopping 19 months after its initial release. Augustana then returned in 2008 with a new lineup (Josiah Rosen had left the band for a solo career in early 2006, only to be replaced by guitarist/mandolin player Chris Sachtleben) and a new album, Can't Love, Can't Hurt. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

History

In Autumn 2002 at Greenville College in Illinois Dan Layus joined friends together to create music. They began by re-recording "More than a Love Song" which Dan had written for his high school girlfriend, back then in California. They wanted to call themselves The Looking Glass but changed their mind after finding another band of the same name. They quickly chose the "Augustana" which Josiah claimed is an African word for monsoon season. It was also the name of Augustana College which frequently traveled to Greenville to compete in sporting events. The original members included Dan Layus, Josiah Rosen, Kyle Baker and Simeon Lohrman. They recorded a full length record, Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays in the home recording studio of Jon King. The debut album was released in Spring 2003 and only 1000 copies were produced. Later that year the band recorded Mayfield EP and only 25 copies were made. [2]

Dan Layus decided to move back to Southern California with band mate Josiah Rosen, where they eventually found their drummer, Justin South. The band found fame with their second album, All the Stars and Boulevards, which sold 300,000 copies in the United States, including over 1,000,000 singles of "Boston".

The band have been featured on numerous tours with artists such as Switchfoot, Maroon 5, The Fray, Counting Crows, Dashboard Confessional, O.A.R., Snow Patrol, The Damnwells, Goo Goo Dolls, Acceptance, and Cartel, OneRepublic as well as having their own headlining tours. They also just recently completed being part of the Traveling Circus and Medicine Show tour, headlined by Counting Crows and also featuring Michael Franti and Spearhead.

All the Stars and Boulevards (2005-2007)

All the Stars and Boulevards was released September 6, 2005 and reached #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and #96 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.[3] The first single from the album, Boston, was released in 2005. It was a different version from the one on their debut album, Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays. The album was re-released on September 12, 2006 and was announced through the band's MySpace page. The album was made available exclusively at Best Buy stores. It was also available on the Best Buy website, where it was sold out by the following day. The new features on this re-release are: a re-mixed version of "Wasteland", a new track named "Marie", acoustic versions of "Boston" and "Stars and Boulevards", and music videos for "Boston" and "Stars and Boulevards".

Josiah Rosen left the band in April 2006 and since has signed with Appeal Records as The Last Almanac. The label is releasing A Memoir in 2008.

At the beginning of 2007, the band embarked on their second headlining theatre tour, supported by Vega 4. The band also opened for Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional on his first solo tour since the re-release of The Swiss Army Romance, in late 2007.

Can't Love, Can't Hurt (2008-Present)

The band released their third album, Can't Love, Can't Hurt, on April 29, 2008. The first single from the album is titled "Sweet and Low."

On May 1, 2008, the band appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

On May 5, 2008, the song "Twenty Years" appeared on One Tree Hill.

On October 17, 2008 the song "Twenty Years" appeared on "Numb3rs".

The Song Boston appeared on Scrubs, Smallville and One Tree Hill and also appeared on The Big Bang Theory, sung by Leonard.

Band member John Vincent has acquired the nickname "Grizzly Keys" from many of his fans.

The second single taken from Can't Love, Can't Hurt is "I Still Ain't Over You", and it reached #22 on the Adult album alternative chart.

The band is currently working on a fourth album.
