‘Aus den Gruben, hier im Graben’

‘Aus den Gruben, hier im Graben’, first line of the child's song in the Novelle by Goethe. It has been suggested that the first part of the line alludes to Daniel's situation in the lion's den, and the second to the ‘Burggraben’ of the old castle in the Novelle.
