| German Literature Companion: Austerlitz |
Austerlitz, a battle, fought on 2 December 1805 between the French armies under Napoleon and the combined Austrian and Russian armies. The battlefield lay to the west of Austerlitz, a small town in Moravia, then Austrian territory. The forces engaged amounted to 65, 000 French and 82, 000 allies. The French outmanœuvred and outfought their opponents, who lost in casualties and prisoners 30 per cent of their strength. The battle ended the campaign and led to the Treaty of Preßburg (1805), by which Austria suffered substantial territorial loss, and ultimately to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
