Australia competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece with 482 competitors, which was the second largest Olympic team. Australian athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games since 1896. Australia is represented by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). 470 competitors, 268 men and 202 women, took part in 219 events in 33 sports.[1]

Australia entered the Athens Games having won a total of 58 medals, including 16 gold, as the host of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Its strongest sports were swimming, cycling, diving and rowing.
