The Australian Gospel Music Awards recognise achievement across Christian music genres within Australia. The awards themselves are divided into the categories of songs, achievement (sales and airplay), music videos and lifetime recognition.
Officially launched in 1994, the individual awards are known affectionately as the "Angels" and represent the pinnacle of Christian music recognition in Australia.
The organisational structure behind the awards is coordinated by the Australian Gospel Music Association and involves considerable input from various industry sources. One of the highlights includes the running of the Australian Gospel Songwriting Competition which is judged by representatives from across the Christian music sector and culminates with the Best Song, Lyrics, Music and Genre awards. Industry sales and airplay are sourced from The Rock Across Australia and music videos judged by the senior management of various Australian Christian television broadcasters.
The industry's peak lifetime achievement is recognised through the Yamaha Golden Gospel Award. This has been awarded to a wide range of industry performers, production and songwriting personalities and include: Jimmy Little, Francine Bell, Sister Janet Mead, Martin Erdman, Family, Peter Dodds McCormack, amongst others.
Other achievement category award winners have included Hillsong Church, Anthony Callea, Carter and Carter, Oxford Falls CCC, Venetta Fields, and others.
