Austrasien
Austrasien or Austrien, in the early Middle Ages denoted the eastern half of the Frankish Empire of the Merovingians (see Merowinger) from 430 to 751, covering roughly present-day Rhineland, Hesse, Württemberg (later Bavaria also), as well as Holland, Belgium, and north-eastern France. Its chief towns were Reims and Metz.
