Plot

Raya Martin, arguably the most acclaimed experimental filmmaker in the Philippines, explores the common ground between past and present in this unconventional drama. As a young man (J.K. Anikoche) travels by foot to the home of his brother (Lowell Conales), we slowly discover that he's being followed by men with surveillance equipment. The man had been reading a biography of Philippine revolutionary Andres Bonifacio, and a passage about the murder of Bonifacio and his bother made him want to contact his sibling. As the young man arrives, he and his brother are captured by intelligence agents and they're spirited away; as the story cuts back and forth between the capture of the two men and the activities around a memorial to Bonifacio, parallels between the two stories become increasingly clear. Autohystoria was released without a musical score, with the filmmaker arranging for different musicians to perform accompaniment at each screening. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
