An autonomous oblast is an autonomous entity within the state which is on the oblast (province) level of the overall administrative subdivision.

In the early stages of the Yugoslav wars Serbs declared oblasts (meaning region in Serbian) in Bosnia and Croatia. These oblasts were called Српска Аутономна Област or Srpska Autonomna Oblast (SAO, Serbian Autonomous Oblast/Region). Oblast means region, but can also mean district.
