Like his idol Jerry Goldsmith before him, Joel McNeely consistently delivers his most compelling and imaginative action scores for films with neither of the aforementioned qualities. Case in point: his work on 1998's justly ridiculed big-screen adaptation of the classic British espionage series The Avengers. The soundtrack for Avengers [Original Score] channels the flavor of classic '60s-era spy movie themes but adds a series of idiosyncratic orchestral elements that vault the score well above simple homage. While McNeely's main title borrows liberally from Laurie Johnson's original Avengers [TV Soundtrack] theme, more intense efforts like "Emma's Balloon Escape" and "The Final Conflict" boast an operatic energy that is thoroughly modern, achieving a near-perfect balance between the adventure music of the past, present and future. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
