Aventine

Aventine, the most southerly of the seven hills of Rome. It remained outside the pomerium or city boundary for religious reasons until AD 49. It was the scene of the story of Hercules and Cacus, whose cave Evander showed to Aeneas (Virgil, Aeneid 8. 184). It was a quarter occupied by the plebeians; a temple of Diana stood on the summit.
