Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings is a leading US producer and marketer of fuel-grade ethanol, a grain alcohol made from corn and mainly used as a gasoline additive to reduce vehicle emissions and enhance engine performance. It produces about 185 million gallons of ethanol at facilities in Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska. By-products, such as corn feed, brewers yeast, and distillers grain, provide another source of revenue and help offset its corn costs. Buckeye Energy Services and biofuels supply company BioUrja Trading are among Aventine's largest customers. In 2010 the company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
