Aventinus, whose real name was Johannes Turmaier (Abensberg, 1477-1534, Regensburg), studied in Vienna under Celtis and in 1508 entered the service of the Bavarian court, becoming court historiographer in 1517. He wrote textbooks of language (1512) and music (1516). His chief work is a history of Bavaria written first in Latin (Annales ducum Boiariae, 1511), then in German (Bayerische Chronik, 1533). Aventinus also produced in 1519 the first map of Bavaria.
