Veterinary Dictionary: Avibacterium

A genus of gram negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod shaped bacteria in the family Pasteurellaceae that are found predominantly in birds. Previously members of the genus Pasteurella.

  • A. avium — commensal in birds. Can cause sinusitis and pneumonia in calves. Previously called Pasteurella avium and Haemophilus avium.
  • A. gallinarum — commensal in birds, but an occasional cause of low grade disease.
  • A. paragallinarum — the cause of infectious coryza in chickens.
  • A. volantium — commensal in birds; not known to be pathogenic. Previously called Haemophilus paragallinarum.
