Historic places

  • Eglise du Dompeter (The Church Of The House Of Peter)
One of the oldest churches in Alsace. The current building dates from the eleventh century and was built on the foundations of a Merovingian era church. Pope Leo IX,a native of Eguisheim, visited the newly rebuilt church in 1049. An ancient linden tree, which, according to legend, provided shade for the earliest parishioners, is nonetheless one of the oldest trees in the area.[1]

History

The village is on the old Roman road leading from Molsheim to Saverne. Archaeological digs in the 1930s unearthed numerous objects from this period.
