AVS

(Audio Video Coding Standard) A video compression technique developed by Chinese companies and supported by the Chinese government. Expected to provide better compression than MPEG-2, AVS was created to avoid paying royalties to the MPEG licensors, which are outside of China. See MPEG LA and EVD.

Marketing Dictionary: Address Verification Service (AVS)
Top

Service of credit card issuers and processors that validates the billing address given by a card customer when placing a telephone or Internet order and subsequently authorizes a charge. Cataloguers use AVS to identify fraudulent orders. The address match is based on ZIP code. The AVS system is not foolproof and will, for example, authorize charges when the bill-to address given by the customer is correct and the ship-to address is fraudulent.
