Previously called Oudh and Awadh. It is one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, a place of pilgrimage and revered as the legendary birthplace of the god Rāma, the hero of the epic poem, Rāmāyana. Ayodhyā means 'invincible' or 'unconquerable' in Sanskrit.
