Azatan (Armenian: Ազատան; formerly, Karakilisa, Karakhs, and Pokr Karakilisa) is a village and rural community (municipality) in the Shirak Province of Armenia. The National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia (ARMSTAT) reported its population was 5,697 in 2010,[1] up from 5,117 at the 2001 census.[2]
The name derives from the Armenian word Azatan (Armenian: Ազատան) - meaning "freedmen" .
