Azure: Ideas for the Jewish Nation is a bilingual quarterly journal published by the Shalem Center in Jerusalem. It was founded as a forum for new and original writing on issues relating to Jewish thought and identity, Zionism, and the State of Israel. It is the only journal of its kind which is published in Hebrew and English editions. As such it serves as a common platform for the exchange of ideas between Israelis and Jews worldwide. It shares some content with Azure, but also publishes pieces which appear only in Hebrew.
Azure was established in 1996. It was originally published twice a year, but eventually grew into a quarterly. Ofir Haivry served as the first editor-in-chief, followed by Daniel Polisar and David Hazony. In 2007, Assaf Sagiv became editor-in-chief.
Notable contributors have included Michael Oren, Yoram Hazony, Yossi Klein Halevi, A.B. Yehoshua, Ruth Gavison, Amnon Rubinstein, Natan Sharansky, Alain Finkielkraut, Amotz Asa-El, David Hazony, Meir Soleveichik, Claire Berlinski, Robert Bork, and Moshe Yaalon. Techelet has published Hebrew translations of classic essays by authors such as Emmanuel Kant, David Hume, William James, G.K. Chesterton, Martin Luther King Jr., C.S. Lewis, Alasdair MacIntyre, Winston Churchill, Matthew Arnold, and Leo Strauss.
Azure has generally placed a strong emphasis on strengthening Jewish and Zionist values. It is highly critical of post-national and radical trends in academia, opposes judicial activism in the Israeli legal system, and supports free-market reforms in the Israeli economy.
