B.B. King Wails was originally released in 1959 on the budget label Crown. This is vintage B.B. King fronting a big band that glides through ballad-heavy material. While this was a successful direction for King, the following year he released My Kind of Blues, which was a complete turnaround, stripping the instrumentation to the bare essentials, sans orchestra. Any of B.B. King's early Crown releases are essential, and considering that the 2003 Ace reissues feature previously unissued bonus tracks and midline pricing, these are the ones to grab. ~ Al Campbell, Rovi
