A deity whose sanctuary was located in Shechem (Judg 9:4). After the death of Gideon, the Israelites worshiped Baal-Berith (Judg 8:33) who is called "the god Berith" in Judges 9:46.

Baal-berith ('əl-bē'rĭth) [Heb.,=Lord of the covenant], local god of Shechem mentioned in the Book of Judges. It has been suggested that the Israelites and local inhabitants of Shechem ratified a covenant there in the temple of Baal.
