House of Babenberg

Austrian ruling house in the 10th – 13th century. Leopold I of Babenberg became margrave of Austria in 976. The Babenbergs' power was modest until the 12th century, when they came to dominate the Austrian nobility. With the death of Duke Frederick II in 1246, the male line ended, and the family's power declined rapidly.
