BabyFirstTV

BabyFirstTV is the first cable and satellite channel in the US dedicated to providing programmes designed for babies up to 3 years old. It broadcasts out of Newark, New Jersey.

BabyFirst TV is available on Dish Network Channel 126 and DirecTV Channel 293. the standard subscription price was initially $9.99 a month but is now $4.99 a month for the channel. It launched in Summer 2006.

This channel has received criticism from some parents, who believe that babies should not be exposed to television, and should instead learn through social interaction.[citation needed]

A research led by Frederick Zimmerman and Dr. Dimitri Christakis, from the University of Washington, shows that watching TV is harmful to babies. With every hour per day babies spend watching TV programs intended for babies, they learn six to eight fewer new vocabulary words than babies who never watch TV. In early 2007 the channel launched in the UK and Ireland on Sky Digital channel 623 (along with Baby TV on EPG 624) and was free in the first few weeks but is now a subscription channel.
