Review

As compilations go, this double-disc package from Haenssler Classic may not be the most exciting collection of J.S. Bach's organ music ever made, but it is a well-rounded package of the best-known works, and the presentation is enlivened by the inclusion of five brilliant performers on a variety of instruments. Leading off the program with the celebrated Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Kay Johannsen is represented by selections from five of his Bach albums and is followed by five other prominent organists on the label: Andrea Marcon, Wolfgang Zerer, Martin Lücker, Bine Katrine Bryndorf, and Pieter van Dijk; all of their selections are included in Haenssler's Complete Organ Works of J.S. Bach. Specialists in Bach's music will delight in hearing nine German, Dutch, and Danish organs masterfully played by these talented musicians; beginners will recognize many of these pieces, particularly the great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, the popular chorale prelude Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, and the monumental Passacaglia in C minor, all essential listening. One drawback to having so many artists and instruments recorded in different venues is that the differences in volume levels are more noticeable when the selections are side-by-side; still, none of the recordings are inferior, and with this variability of sound taken into account, the album is quite enjoyable for its high-quality performances and profound masterworks. ~ Blair Sanderson, All Music Guide
