The Bachelor of Applied Science, often abbreviated as BAS or BASc is an undergraduate degree awarded for a course of study that generally lasts three years in the United Kingdom and Australia, and four to five years in Canada, the Netherlands and the United States.

Usage

In Canada, the Netherlands and other places the BAS is equivalent to the Bachelor of Engineering, and is classified as a professional degree. In the United States, Australia and New Zealand this degree is awarded in other more general fields of study. In the United States, students completing this degree usually build on past education at the associate degree or diploma level; however, options usually exist for students with limited or no past higher education to complete degree requirements, usually 128-credit hours. The BAS is designed to provide opportunities for career advancement and continued studies. The degree articulates well with high school programs, associate degree programs, diploma programs and provides opportunities for advanced learning through graduate studies in a variety of fields or advancement through professional certifications.

On 20 February 2009 the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Ronald Plasterk, proposed to replace all the existing degrees offered by Dutch vocational universities, such as the BBA, BEd and BEng, with the BAA and the BASc.[1]
