Plot
Although Frances Hodgson Burnett did not feel the need to write a sequel to her classic fantasy novel The Secret Garden, this did not prevent producer Norman Rosemont from commissioning just such a sequel. Set in 1946, Back to the Secret Garden finds Mary Lennox, the youthful heroine of the original novel, all grown up and far removed from her beloved enchanted garden in Yorkshire's Mistlewaith Manor. Now living in New York, Mary comes in contact with Lizzie (Camilla Belle), a feisty Brooklyn-born orphan. It is Lizzie who tries to save the day by heading off to England and endeavoring to save Mary's secret garden, which has been literally dying in its caregiver's absence. Joan Plowright, George Baker, Cherie Lunghi, and Leigh Lawson co-star in this German-British co-production, which was originally intended for theatrical release. The American premiere of Back to the Secret Garden appeared on the Showtime Cable Network on September 2, 2001 -- nearly two years after the film's completion. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Back To The Secret Garden is a sequel to the 1993 film The Secret Garden. It contains some of the previous characters such as, Lady Mary Craven, Sir Colin Craven who are now married. Martha Sowerby who is now the mistress of Misselthwaite Manor now that it's an orpahnage for war children. Dickon is mentioned to have died fighting in the war as a memorial is held in the secret garden.
In 1946, Lady Mary Craven (Cherie Lunghi) visits an American Orphanage where she tells the children about the exchange program that will allow one child to travel to England and stay at Misselthwaite Manor which is now an orphanage for children who lost relatives in the war. There she meets young Lizzie Buscana (Camilla Belle), who is in the garden trying to take care of her mother's rose bush buried there. Lady Mary then tells Lizzie about the exchange program and informs her all about the secret garden. Lizzie then agrees to do the exchange program in order to see the secret garden.
Lizzie soon arrives in England and is met at the train station by Martha Sowerby (Joan Plowright) who is now in charge of Misselthwaite Manor. Soon she discovers that the children are only allowed to be in the garden on a Sunday after church and must be on their best behaviour and not touch anything. Lizzie soon makes friends with Geraldine, Steven, and later Robert (Aled Roberts). One night Lizzie goes to the garden when she must be asleep in bed, and is visited by the animals. She understands that she must help save the dying garden, but is not sure how to. On the way back to the manor she notices a fire in Robert's room, who fell asleep reading with the candle still alight. After alerting everyone and helps put out the fire, she is questioned by Martha as to why she is still dressed and how she came to see that there was a fire. Lizzie then tells Martha about what happened with the animals and the magic door she had seen before. Martha soon realizes that Lizzie had stolen the key to the secret garden from her desk drawer and finds out that Geraldine was the one to tell Lizzie where it was, but she believes that the key should belong to Lizzie and that the garden has chosen her ,like Lady Mary, as Martha couldn't find the magic door herself.
Geraldine (Florence Hoath) who is jealous of Lizzie, hears about Ms. Sowerby giving the key to Lizzie and persuades Steven to steal it because Lizzie had hurt his feelings by not being his sweetheart. When Lizzie finds the key is missing, she first assumes that Robert had taken it due to the fact they have not been getting on. She then goes to find the key with Robert and discover that Steven (Justin Girdler) had taken it because Geraldine had told him to and chucked it in the pond. Lizzie confronts Geraldine who denies it but soon confesses when Martha punishes her for being a liar and makes her clean the food hall floor.
Lizzie then gets told that maybe she doesn't need the key because of the magic door. When Martha goes to meet Lady Mary who has arrived back to Misselthwaite, she tells her of the garden and of the bad state it's in even though it has been properly cared for. Lizzie soon realises that the garden has been starved of children's love and fun and with the help of Robert she gathers all the children and the run to the garden where the magic door has appeared and the garden comes to life once again. Lady Mary and Sir Colin (Leigh Lawson) arrive with Martha and are amazed at what they see, as the garden doesn't look dead like Martha had told them. Lizzie then tells Lady Mary that the garden was in neglect of love and that she should not have it closed anymore. Lady Mary then informs Lizzie that the garden now belongs to her and that it took a girl from across the sea many years ago to bring the garden back to life as it has taken a girl from across the sea to do it again, and that it's up to her to do as she wishes with the garden. Lizzie then announces that the garden will stay open forever so that all the children can enjoy it.
It ends with the children playing in the garden as well as playing with the animals who have all come out.
