Backdoor Straight

Top

In Texas Hold'em, this term refers to when a player receives the two cards needed to complete a straight on the turn (fourth street) and the river (fifth street).

SoundPoker Says: A player who makes a "backdoor straight" hand usually holds hole cards of the same suit, or numerical connectors. For example, assume you held Q-J (spades), the flop showed 8 (hearts) - 2 (spades) - 4 (spades), the turn was a 10 (hearts) and the river was a 9 (clubs). With this hand you would have a straight Q-J-10-9-8. Because the two cards that completed your hand came on the turn and the river, this hand would be considered a backdoor straight.
