Review

Baghdad is a fantastic album from Ilham Al Madfai. Recorded in both London and Amman, Jordan, Baghdad brings in various jazzy elements, but they are used to expand the tradition of Arabic pop rather than as an attempt at some sort of cross-cultural mix. Al Madfai plays acoustic guitar, not exactly a prominent instrument in Arabic music, and also uses lots of jazzy piano, some shimmering Rhodes, and a bit of electronic percussion alongside the more traditional Arabic percussion, kanun, ney, and violin. Vocals are shared among a handful of singers, and the soloing is uniformly excellent (especially the piano and violin), but it is Al Madfai's arranging that is really standout here. He is able to incorporate these jazz-derived sounds and use them in a way that doesn't really dilute the traditional Arabic flavor. This is an excellent album that adds a new freshness to Arabic pop without trampling on the tradition the way some more dance-oriented modern Arabic pop has. Recommended. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi

Baghdad was a 7-inch EP released by American punk rock band The Offspring in 1991. It is currently out of print, but sold 3000 copies within one week of its release. Although Baghdad has never been reissued on CD in its entirety, two of the songs were later released on compilations: "Hey Joe" appeared on Go Ahead Punk...Make My Day (Nitro Records, 1996) and "Baghdad" on Rock Against Bush, Vol. 1 (Fat Wreck Chords, 2004). It also appeared on the band's 2010 Japan-only compilation album Happy Hour.[1] The band's official website does not list Baghdad in the otherwise comprehensive discography.[2]

2. "Hey Joe (Billy Roberts)"   2:38
3. "Baghdad"   3:17
4. "The Blurb"   1:59

Track Notes

The EP includes an early version of "Get It Right" of which a later version was released on their second studio album Ignition. The title track "Baghdad" was a re-release of the song "Tehran" which appeared on the Offspring's debut self-titled album in 1989. It switches the words "Tehran" (the capital of Iran) for "Baghdad" (the capital of Iraq). The EP also includes a cover version of "Hey Joe" by Billy Roberts (a different version from what was later released on "Gone Away") and a previous unreleased instrumental track "The Blurb" (which would not appear on any future recordings.)
