An Old Irish word meaning place or piece of land and a Modern Irish word meaning town or townland; it appears in innumerable Irish and Scottish place-names such as Baile Átha Cliath [Irish, town of the hurdle ford]; Dublin, or Baile an Mhóta [Irish, townland of the mound]: Ballymote. It is usually anglicized as ‘Bally-’.
