Many smooth jazz releases lack sufficient diversity to keep listeners excited from cut to cut, but multi-faceted sideman and Grammy winning songwriter John Jarvis ensures that his debut is blessed with unpredictable dynamics. A wide variety of moods-from reflective to cheerful, haunting to spirited--allow Jarvis to explore a multitude of keyboard twists, and Jarvis uses his synth rack for some effective ambience. While Balancing Act is compositionally all aces, Jarvis commits the same mini-sin as his labelmate Billy Joe Walker, Jr. (who contributes some stylish guitar passages). Most tracks are way too short to keep the magic flowing. Just when Jarvis fires into a cool improvisation, it's time to wrap up. Some extended attention would make this gem shine brighter. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
