Balderhead Reservoir is a large reservoir in County Durham, England. It is one of three reservoirs that are located in a delightful and picturesque valley known as Baldersdale. It is situated about 5 miles west of Cotherstone and 'bridges' the River Balder which flows in an easterly direction to join the River Tees at Cotherstone. It supplies water for Teesdale and is owned by Northumbrian Water. It was built in 1965.[citation needed]
The water leaving Balderhead Reservoir feeds the Blackton Reservoir which in turn feeds into the Hury Reservoir - the third of the three reservoirs in Baldersdale.
A little further north there are two other reservoirs (Selset Reservoir and Grassholme Reservoir)that control the flow of the River Lune that runs in an easterly direction through Lunedale to join the River Tees at Middleton-in-Teesdale.
