Balfour Gardiner
Henry Balfour Gardiner
(b London, 1877; d Salisbury, 1950). Eng. composer. Mus. master, Winchester Coll. 1907. Promoted concerts of contemp. Eng. mus. 1910–20, and was especial champion of Holst, for whom he arr. a private f.p. of The Planets in Queen's Hall, London, cond. by Boult in 1918. He also enabled Delius to continue to live in Fr. by buying his house at Grez‐sur‐Loing. Comp. sym., Shepherd Fennel's Dance, orch. (after Hardy), News from Whydah, ch., orch., chamber mus., and songs.
